Papeterie Saint-Gilles: a beautiful work

Founded in 1965 by Felix-Antoine Savard, poet and author of «Menaud maître-draveur» and his friend Mark Donohue, the Papeterie Saint-Gilles is located at Saint-Joseph-de-la-Rive, Charlevoix in Quebec. His first «maître-papetier» Georges Audet learned the trade at Richard de Bas, Auvergne, in France. Transformed in ECONOMUSEUM ® by Cyril Simard in 1988, the Papeterie Saint-Gilles is completely funded by the sale of its products.

Through the years, this unique workshop in Canada stays strictly artisanal. The finest cotton and acid free paper is handmade, sheet by sheet, using 17th century techniques. This great quality paper, at times, is inlaid with petals of flowers and leaves and imprinted with the unmistakable Saint-Gilles watermark. Used for book printing, book binding, personal correspondence, drawing and watercolouring: you will be fascinated by the many facets of paper.

Its founder died August 24 th, 1982, at the age of 86.

«The Papeterie Saint-Gilles originated in the commendable desire to see Quebec revive french artisanal tradition, in the prospect of beautifull works to be created, with respect for the nature and to honour Man's written Word.»
