Handmade paper manufacturing process

Beating

Cotton dry pulp is beaten and mixed with water and sizing to produce a compact pulp.

Vatting

The pulp is then transferred to a large blender equipped vat, where the pulp is mixed with flower petals.

Sheet Formation

Craftsman forms the sheets one at a time, immersing the sieve in the pulp mixture. Finally, the sheets are laid on woolen blankets until a stack of 100 sheets is completed

Pressing

To wring dry the sheets, they are placed between thick felt pads. Systematically, they are piled one on top of the other, placed in a hydraulic press and the water is extracted.

Drying

The drying process is completed as the sheets are hung and air dried for at least 24 hours.

Calendering

The paper is smoothed, polished and pressed as it passes through a calender formed of two cast iron rollers.
